Our Vision - to inspire and build a love of and involvement in music throughout our community.

Our Mission - to give people, especially children and youth, the opportunity to develop their creative musical potential in an inspirational, affordable, community environment.

Our Philosophy - we affirm that the HSM is about offering:

  • joy of music
  • fun of music
  • opportunity to learn music
  • achieving progressive accomplishments in music
  • making new friends
  • a community organisation
  • involvement and support of parents
  • tuition at an affordable cost

We believe that:

  • music is an important part of a child's education and development
  • there is talent in our community that needs to be developed
  • parent involvement is essential for a child's musical progress
  • the arts are important for the mental health and well-being of all people
  • the skills, talent and commitment of our tutors are central and a key to the Howick School of Music's success
  • we contribute to the development of community trends and needs in music

In addition to the School's philosophy, we believe that the more effective musical education combines tuition with ensemble performance. The HSM offers a range of ensembles - string, orchestra and wind. These are offered as part of the enrolment package. The stimulus of making music together with friends and like-minded musicians of a similar age and/or ability is a key factor in furthering the interests and musical development of each student. Success stories of the Howick School of Music are many. A number of past pupils have become professional musicians, teachers, and playing in professional and community orchestras. Many Howick and Pakuranga parents remember attending music lessons at the HSM as a happy and influential time in their childhood. Today they, in turn, bring their children to the HSM.
