Thomas Chan - Senior Tutor for Ensembles

  • Tutor of Bassoon / Oboe / Saxophone
  • Conductor of HSM Training Band and HSM Concert Band

Thomas Chan began his professional career in 1970 as bassoonist of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 1977 he was awarded a scholarship for advanced studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

When he returned to Hong Kong in the summer of 1980, he joined the Hong Kong Government Music Office as music officer. Thomas has had wide experience as soloist, professional orchestral player, ensemble player, clinician, adjudicator, administrator and composer.

As a composer, Thomas has his scores being published by the Australian music publisher, the BROLGA MUSIC. His biography as a composer had been included in THE HERITAGE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF BAND MUSIC by William H. Rehrig.

He was invited as principal adjudicator in the 2004 Hong Kong Youth Music Interflows – Symphonic Band Contest.

Thomas is now residing in Auckland, New Zealand since 1997, working as Senior Tutor at Howick School of Music and teaching as Itinerant Instrumental Music Teacher at several schools.

He appears frequently as guest conductor in the concerts of The Academy of Strings and still occasionally writing music for them and the local student orchestras and bands.
