Class & Hire Subscriptions: These may be paid either in full at enrolment or in two parts. You will find all the pricing for lessons in the lists below. PLEASE NOTE that tuition is for a full year only and no refunds will be given once classes have commenced.

Guitar kid
The HSM offers group and individual tuition for all Orchestral instruments:

Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass and Harp

Woodwind: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon

Brass: Trumpet/Cornet, Trombone, French Horn, Low Brass on request

Percussion: Drum-kit, Percussion and Timpani

All students are required to join at least one ensemble. There is no additional charge for this.

Orchestras – Concert Bands

The Howick School of Music runs three Orchestras and two Concert Bands.

These are held on Saturday mornings and are organised according to Grade/Level.

The Ensemble Subscription for 2018 is $50

HOWICK YOUTH ORCHESTRA

  • Rehearsals on Saturdays 12.05pm to 1.05 pm.
  • Strings: Grade 6 and above.
  • Wind: Grade 7/8 by audition.
  • Percussion: please inquire.

SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (Grade 4-5)  (Grade 5/6 Wind/ percussion by audition)

  • Rehearsals on Saturdays 10.35pm to 11.20 pm.
  • Strings: Grade 3-5
  • Wind: Grade 6/7 by audition.
  • Percussion: please inquire.

JUNIOR STRINGS  (Grade 1 – 3)  – Just strings!

  • Rehearsals on Saturdays 8.45am to 9.30am.
  • Strings: Grade 1-3
  • Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass and Harp only.

HSM CONCERT BAND  

  • Rehearsals on Saturdays 11.20am to 12.05pm.
  • Grade 4 and above.
  • Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Horn, Low Brass and percussion.

WINDBAND

  • Rehearsals on Saturdays 9.30am to 10.15am.
  • Grades 1-3
  • Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Horn, Low Brass and percussion.
Boy plays recorder

This is an introductory music class for 5 to 6 year olds which provides students with opportunities to explore their musicality through fun and interactive musical experiences. This class will include an introduction to the following:

  • Singing
  • Percussion
  • Chime Bars and tuned percussion
  • Recorder
  • Ukulele
  • Violin
  • Instruments of the Orchestra

$295 subscription for one full year. Students must have turned 5 years of age by 1st February 2018

Piano/Keyboard  & Guitar Lessons

Levels 1 & 2

  • For students aged 7-9 years old
  • Classes are 30 minutes duration
  • 4 students per class
  • Cost $325 for a full year

Levels 3 & 4

  • Classes are 30 minutes duration
  • Maximum of 4 students per class
  • Cost $395 for a full year

Level 5

  • Maximum 3 per group
  • 30 minute lessons
  • Cost $450 for a full year

AIP – Paired Lessons

  • Classes are 45 minutes duration
  • 2 students per class
  • Cost $750 for a full year

Individual Lessons

  • All individual lessons are 30 minutes duration
  • Cost $995 for a full year

Guitar Ensemble

  • 11.35am – 12.05pm
  • All students Level 4+ and above are encouraged to audition for this group.
  • There is no subscription for this ensemble

Individual Piano lessons

  • All individual lessons are 30 minutes duration. (Longer lessons are available at request.)
  • Available only to students who have attained Level 3 Keyboard
  • Cost $995 for a full year

Students in our Violin School study violin in group lessons for five levels.

All our violin students participate in one of our three string groups or three orchestras appropriate to their level.

Level 1

  • for students 7-9 years of age
  • $395 yearly subscription
  • Students attend a violin class on Saturday at 8.45am, 9.30am, 10.35am or 11.20am
  • Students also attend Tuesday String Group class at 4.15pm
  • All classes are 45 minutes in duration

Level 2

  • $395 yearly subscription
  • Students attend a violin class on Saturday morning
  • Students also attend Tuesday String Group class at 5.00pm
  • All classes are 45 minutes in duration

Level 3

  • $450 yearly subscription
  • Students attend a violin class on Saturday morning
  • Students also attend Tuesday String Group class at 5.45pm
  • All classes are 45 minutes in duration

Level 4-5

At level four and five, students join our Junior Strings Orchestra on Saturday mornings 8.45am to 9.30am.

After Level 5 students move on to paired or individual tuition.

They can play in our Symphony Orchestra or Howick Youth Orchestra depending upon their level.

Have fun as you learn to play an instrument with your friens in our Beginner Band. This class is for students aged 9-12 years old.

Instrument Class: Saturday 9.30am to 10.15am

HSM Band Class: Tuesday 4.15pm to 5.00pm

2018 Subscription: $395 + $10 Scholarship Levy

Instrument Hire: $50 for level one Band students

 

The HSM band class is limited to 30 students

Students must be 9+ years old by 1st February 2018 to enrol in this course.

Students choosing Oboe, Bassoon, Trombone or French Horn must be 10+ years old.

Level one trombone class is held on Saturdays at 10.35am to 11.20am – Scholarship is available.

The Tuesday band class will only run providing there is sufficient enrolment in all instruments.

All Level One band students are required to attend both lessons each week.

All of our Society Members contribute a $10 Scholarship Levy each year per family towards our Member’s Scholarship Fund.

Applications are now open for 2018 Scholarships

Scholarship Categories:

  • Lonely Instrument Scholarship -$200 towards first year of study with free instrument hire for any of the following instruments: Double Bass, Bassoon, Trombone, French Horn.
  • Performance Scholarship – $300 towards yearly subscription for students enrolled in IND. There are five scholarships to award to students who have shown commitment to their instrument lessons, ensemble and concert participation, and success in ABRSM examinations and who intend to continue their studies at HSM.
  • Helping Hand Scholarship – Scholarship is available for students/families facing financial difficulty. Please submit inquiries to the Director of Music.

Applications for Performance Scholarships should be made in writing and emailed to the Director of Music no later than the 31st December 2017

Applications for Helping Hand and Lonely Instrument Scholarship will be accepted at the time of enrolment.

If you would like to hire an instrument, please ensure that you tick the hire box

at the time of you enrolment.

Your hire fee is used to cover instrument maintenance caused through normal playing wear.
The hirer is responsible for any damage caused through negligence.
